Since the UN Climate Action Summit in September, and the release of the latest IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) report on the ocean and cryosphere in a changing climate, we’ve been reading up on climate science. We’ve been trying to understand how we, as individuals, as a company, and as an industry, can play a bigger part in leading the change that is required. Worldwide, protests against government inaction on climate change have been broadcast across all mainstream media. The latest scientific knowledge has been assessed and there is consensus that Earth’s climate has changed over the last hundred years, and that the main cause is greenhouse emissions from human activities, especially from burning fossil fuels such as coal and oil. The atmosphere and oceans have warmed, sea levels have risen, and glaciers and ice sheets have decreased in size. Now, countries are expected to strongly commit to cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and transition to green economies to mitigate the effects. Businesses are stepping up too and aligning themselves with the science. In pledges to increase renewable energy capacity, over 80 countries have joined the International Solar Alliance.
Does the sun play a role in climate change?
Because we are interested in all things sun related, we wanted to know more about the sun and any role it plays in climate change. Here’s a good article from NASA:
It explains that we know the sun influences Earth’s climate (through subtle changes in Earth’s orbit around the sun) but the global warming we’ve seen over the last few decades is too rapid to be linked to changes in Earth’s orbit, and too large to be caused by solar activity. According to the IPCC, long- and short-term variations in solar activity play only a very small role in Earth’s climate, and warming from increased levels of human-produced greenhouse gases is actually many times stronger than any effects due to recent variations in solar activity. So that’s settled. Now we can just focus on the positive aspects of solar energy, so it’s our time to shine!
Sunny side up 😊
At Energy Partners, we have a very sunny outlook, and we are excited about being a part of the transition from fossil fuels towards the use of renewables. Contact us to plan your own transition for your home or business to a sunnier future on this planet by installing a rooftop solar system.
